As a dedicated breeder of Giant Schnauzers and Standard Poodles, we at Mississippi Poodles, Doodles, and Giants are thrilled to share our passion for these remarkable breeds. With our second litter of Standard Poodle puppies expected in February, we wanted to dive into the age-old debate: Poodles vs. Doodles.

In the dog-loving world, opinions can vary widely, especially when it comes to the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” movement versus owning purebred or hybrid dogs. As someone who has had both adopted pets and purebred animals, I believe there’s room for all perspectives. Let’s explore the unique qualities of Poodles and Doodles with an open mind and mutual respect.

What’s the Difference Between a Poodle and a Doodle?

If you’re familiar with Poodles, you may have also heard about Doodles—hybrid dogs resulting from crossing Poodles with other breeds. Popular Doodle mixes include Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Aussiedoodles, and more. But how do they compare to the purebred Poodle?

While both types have their charm, there are distinct differences worth noting, from their ancestry and breeding practices to their behavior and appearance. Let’s break it down.

Poodle vs. Doodle: Ancestry and Breeding

Poodles are a purebred dog breed recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and other organizations. They have a long history of being bred for specific traits like intelligence, agility, and hypoallergenic qualities.

On the other hand, Doodles are hybrid or designer dogs. A Doodle is any dog that’s a mix of a Poodle and another breed. Popular Doodle varieties include:

  • Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever + Poodle)

  • Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever + Poodle)

  • Aussiedoodle (Australian Shepherd + Poodle)

  • Schnoodle (Schnauzer + Poodle)

  • Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Poodle)

  • And many more!

Each Doodle mix inherits traits from both parent breeds, making them versatile and diverse.

Poodle vs. Doodle: Appearance

Poodles are known for their elegant, slender build and tightly curled coats. Their refined appearance sets them apart. Doodles, however, vary widely in appearance depending on the breed they’re mixed with. They often have wavy or shaggy fur, which is generally softer and less curly than a Poodle’s coat.

Size is another key difference. Standard Poodles weigh 35-70 pounds, while Doodles can range anywhere from 10 to 100 pounds depending on their parentage.

Behavior and Temperament

Poodles are renowned for their intelligence, trainability, and calm demeanor. They are often described as regal and aloof but are deeply loyal and affectionate with their families.

Doodles, while playful and friendly, may not always match the Poodle’s level of intelligence. However, their personalities are typically more outgoing, making them ideal companions for active families or those seeking a more playful pet.

Hypoallergenic Qualities

One of the most debated topics in the Poodle vs. Doodle discussion is hypoallergenic traits. Poodles are famously hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for allergy sufferers.

Doodles, while bred for allergy-sensitive homes, often don’t achieve the same hypoallergenic standards as purebred Poodles. The fur texture and shedding levels in Doodles can vary significantly, depending on their genetic makeup.

Lifespan

Lifespan differences also exist between Poodles and Doodles. Standard Poodles live 12-15 years, while Doodles can live anywhere from 10 to 17 years. Smaller Doodle breeds tend to live longer than larger ones, a trend common in dogs of all types.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Family

Whether you choose a Poodle or a Doodle, understanding their unique traits and needs is key. Poodles offer predictability in temperament, coat, and size, while Doodles provide variety and a mix of traits from two beloved breeds.

At Mississippi Poodles, Doodles, and Giants, we’re committed to responsible breeding and helping families find the perfect canine companion. If you’re considering adding a Standard Poodle or Giant Schnauzer to your family, we’d love to share more about our upcoming litters.

Let’s celebrate the joy of dogs—purebred or hybrid—and respect the choices of fellow dog lovers. After all, every pet deserves a loving home.
